Saint Dominic’s iconography usually represents the saint as a loving-hearted, open-minded man immersed in prayer or in dialogue with heretics enthusiastically converting them to the true faith. Written sources, however, such as the works of the celebrated thirteenth-century bishop, historian and inquisitor Bernard Gui O.P. (of The Name of the Rose-fame) reveal a more complex, more violent image of the preacher. This talk offers a tentative interpretation of Dominic’s representation as a violent person.
