Gecser Ottó az ELTE-n szerzett szociológus diplomát, a Közép-Európai Egyetemen pedig medievisztikából MA végzettséget és doktorátust. Jelenleg docens az ELTE Társadalomtudományi Karán. Kutatásai egyebek mellett prédikátorokkal és prédikációval, szentkultuszokkal, illetve a pestis vallási és orvosi értelmezéseivel foglalkoznak, mindenekelőtt a 13-15. században.
