St. Wenceslas, the 10th-century Duke of Bohemia and martyr, is a remarkable character in medieval hagiography, venerated through in a rich literary tradition preserved in Latin and Old Church Slavonic sources. His cult survived even after the medieval period as the saint became a symbol of political and religious compromise during critical moments in Bohemia’s history, including the Hussite Wars, the Catholic Counter-Reformation, the National Revival, and the turbulent 20th century. Wenceslas’ role as a unifying figure across various historical contexts shows his extraordinary adaptability within Czech historical memory.
